Little Big Shed is the brand-new online platform to help people share stuff and do good.

GoodSense team members  Kylie Bailey, Moumita Das Roy, Kate Jamieson, Maddy Cooper and Karen Short have all been working to help founder Sarmuhabat Singh get Little Big Shed ready for those of us who care about community and environment to list stuff to rent to others (and of course borrow stuff from others too!).

It’s a win-win – and we all need those!

Anything you don’t use all the time – garden tools, kitchen equipment or hobby gear, someone else in your ‘hood or workplace could use, when its sitting idle. Little Big Shed makes it affordable to try a new hobby, mend something broken. Your generosity could even help someone make some extra money.

It’s a win for our communities, our environment, our climate, our wallets – and helps build a sharing economy today.

Getting started is really quick and easy online at www.littlebigshed.co.nz or by downloading Little Big Shed from the App or Play stores.

How does Little Big Shed work?

What’s the catch?

There is no catch!  It’s completely free to list things on Little Big Shed. When someone rents an item, a small transaction fee is deducted from your rental income by our third-party payment provider. But that’s it.

And if an item were to be damaged, it’s insured to $500.

Sarmuhabat is a visionary social entrepreneur launching this free service to help reduce waste, increase equity and tackle climate change.  Little Big Shed is a privately funded venture with no revenue stream, though in the future added options like premium listings might help offset costs.

Meet Sarmuhabat

L to R GoodSense ethical marketing founder and MD Kath Dewar with Little Big Shed founder, CE and social entrepreneur, Sarmuhabat Singh.

Little Big Shed has been created to enable the sharing economy here in Aotearoa New Zealand, with plans to take it to the rest of the world. If we can show it works.  Social entrepreneur, business lecturer and Little Big Shed founder Sarmuhabat Singh, believes one’s success and resources should be shared within the community to help support society as a whole. With roots descending from a long line of Punjab farmers, Sarmuhabat learnt the importance of cultivating land, growing vegetables, and doing things by hand from a young age.

Why list?

Kath has listed a battery charger on Little Big Shed.

When we share our stuff, we help stop extra stuff being bought – this reduces demand and, over time less stuff gets made. That’s good for people and planet.

When you list an item you’ll be helping someone else out who might want to do a DIY job or try a hobby but can’t just buy the equipment. ‘Cause times are tough, right!  And you can help recover what you spent buying your item, over time, by sharing.

The faster we all list items, the sooner there will be enough good stuff to borrow!

Making change

Our consumerist, wasteful economy is structured so we buy things then stow them away between uses. Creating any change takes leaders, people just like you, who will say “Yes! I want to see this succeed and I will list a thing – right now”.

So if you share our frustration with consumerism. If you share our urgency on climate action, if you want to tackle inequality and help build community. Or if you just want to make your lazy stand up paddle board pay for itself between uses,  Little Big Shed is here for you.  But it needs us to use it.

So go ahead and try it – and do let us know how you go!
